The days of feeling optimistic about Valentine's Day are long gone and the desire to watch stereotypical "happily-ever-after" films (which were never much of a fancy of mine to begin with) has vanished along with it. Here is my choice of alternatives when one does not wish to watch blockbuster tat.
Harold and Maude (1971)

#9
Broken Flowers (2005)

#8
Secretary (2002)

#7
Lars and the Real Girl (2007)

#6
The Squid and the Whale (2005)

#5
The Science of Sleep (2006)

#4
Me and You and Everyone We Know (2005)

#3
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)

#2
Blue Valentine (2010)

#1
Blue Velvet (1986)

Great choices! I haven't seen them all - but will now have to see the others - but some of my favourites are on there. I'm especially tickled that you chose Blue Valentine. And why not? But Secretary and Blue Velvet! So much love.

Blue Valentine is quickly becoming one of my favourite films; I have never watched a film so believable. It completely destroyed me. It's utterly heartbreaking.. although I don't think everything is lost in the end.. at least I hope not.
ReplyDeleteBlue Velvet has a special meaning for me, so it had to be number one.
Loads of these are my favourites, and you've inspired me to watch Harold and Maude as it is free with package on Love Film! :)
